I Discovered The Secret of Reading Slumps

Guys, I’ve discovered the secret of the universe.

Or maybe not, but I DID figure out how to break my 5 month long reading slump.

I haven’t been able to finish a book since December no matter how hard I tried. I started 5 different books in the last few months and just could not get through any of them. I was literally forcing myself to read and as someone who used to devour books faster than I could pick them out at the library, that was devastating.

The secret of reading slumps and how to get through them?

Go back to basics!!!

I know some people think it’s super weird or creepy to read children’s/middle school/etc books as an adult, but I don’t think it’s weird at all so…

I found a book in a middle school-high school-ish age series that I hadn’t read yet and in an effort to break that reading slump and FINALLY finish a book, I read it. I read the entire book. All 128 pages of dorky teen goodness. And you know what? After that little book? My next book was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. All 389 pages of it, and it only took a few days.

In that same week, I also read Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh.

AND started Neon Gods by Katee Robert.

(in case you lost count that’s 4 books in ~a week and a half)

If you’re interested, the book that broke my reading slump was Geek Drama from the Geek Girl series by Holly Smale.

Unfortunately, I started a new job right after that and haven’t had nearly enough time to read since. But now I’m rotating between Enter Whining by Fran Drescher, The Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson, and Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. All of them should be finished in the next few days.

(side note… how many of you read multiple books at a time?? I feel like people either love it or can not even think about itπŸ˜‚)

Are you stuck in a reading slump? I would definitely try my little secret trick! I’m so excited that I’m able to enjoy books again and I hope this will help others as well!
